Biography

Doug Hopwood was one of the finest eighthmen South Africa has produced. Born in Cape Town on 3 June 1934 and educated at Wynberg Boys’ High, he played for False Bay and Western Province and won 22 caps between 1960 and 1965.

He had great stamina and a gift for linking with the backs, despite a long-term back injury. On the 1960–61 tour he scored tries against England, Scotland and Ireland. He also scored against Australia in 1961 and Wales in 1964. He died on 10 January 2002.
