Biography

Abie Malan was a hooker with a fierce fighting spirit who played 18 Tests between 1958 and 1965. Born in Kenhardt on 18 November 1935, he came through the Stellenbosch under-19 side with his prop Piet du Toit and played for Western Province and Transvaal.

He played on through a serious knee injury on the 1960–61 tour. He captained South Africa four times in 1963–64, scoring a try in the 22–6 win over Australia and leading the 24–3 win over Wales in Durban. He later became an outspoken national selector. He died on 23 October 2014.
