Biography

Ian Kirkpatrick was a tall, elegant back who played 13 Tests between 1953 and 1961. Born in Bloemfontein on 25 July 1930 and educated at Kimberley Boys’ High and Grey High School, he played for Griqualand West and the Orange Free State.

He made his debut at flyhalf against Australia in 1953 and then moved to inside centre, where he toured New Zealand in 1956 and Britain, Ireland and France in 1960–61. He later became a long-serving coach and administrator. He died on 18 November 2012.
