Biography

Jean de Villiers was a strong, skilful centre and a respected captain who won 109 caps between 2002 and 2015. Born in Paarl on 24 February 1981 and educated at Paarl Gimnasium, he played for Western Province and Munster.

After a knee injury five minutes into his debut, he returned in 2004 and was joint top try-scorer in the Tri Nations. He was part of the 2007 World Cup squad and the 2009 series win over the British and Irish Lions, and captained South Africa 37 times from 2012. He scored 27 Test tries and played at three World Cups.
