Biography

Avril Malan was a tall Transvaal lock who captained South Africa ten times. Born in Pretoria on 9 April 1937 and educated at Wonderboom, he played for Stellenbosch before Transvaal.

He was only 23 when he led the Springboks to an 11–11 draw and an 8–3 win against the 1960 All Blacks, which won the series. He then captained the 1960–61 tour, which won all four Tests against the home nations and drew with France. He won 16 caps.
