Biography

Basie van Wijk was a quick, witty flanker who scored six tries in ten Tests. Born in Vryburg on 5 November 1923, he played for Transvaal. With Hennie Muller and Stephen Fry he formed one of the great loose trios of the era.

He scored two tries against Ireland and others against Scotland and France on the 1951–52 tour, and two more against the 1953 Wallabies. His last Test was against the 1955 British Isles side. He died on 29 August 2002.
