Biography

Stephen Fry was a tall, intelligent flanker who captained South Africa in the drawn 1955 series against the British Isles. Born in Somerset West on 14 July 1924 and educated at Diocesan College (Bishops), he played for Western Province.

He played all five Tests of the 1951–52 tour and all four against the 1953 Wallabies. Leading a young side against a strong 1955 British Isles team, he steered South Africa to a 2–2 draw, and his calm leadership won wide praise. He died on 29 June 2002.
