Biography

Tjol Lategan was a skilful inside centre who played 11 Tests between 1949 and 1953 and lost only one. Born in Stellenbosch on 29 September 1925 and educated at Paul Roos Gymnasium, he played for Western Province and Boland and recovered from a serious knee injury early in his career.

He scored against New Zealand in 1949 and in the 44–0 win over Scotland in 1951. He was part of the 1951–52 side that beat all five European nations. He died on 8 March 2015.
