Biography

Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira was one of the most popular Springboks of all time and a cornerstone of the scrum for more than a decade. Born in Harare on 1 August 1985, he moved to South Africa and played for the Sharks, winning 117 caps between 2008 and 2019.

His dominant scrummaging helped win the 2009 series against the British and Irish Lions. He played at three World Cups, and his final Test was the 2019 World Cup final against England in Yokohama, which South Africa won 32–12. Crowds greeted him with a famous ‘Beast’ chant.
