Biography

Joost van der Westhuizen was one of the greatest scrumhalves the game has known. Born in Pretoria on 20 February 1971, he played for Northern Transvaal and won 89 caps between 1993 and 2003, scoring 38 tries, a South African record at the time.

Tall, strong and quick, he was a constant threat around the fringes and a brave defender. He won the 1995 World Cup, played at two more World Cups, and captained South Africa ten times. Later diagnosed with motor neurone disease, he raised awareness of the illness. He died on 6 February 2017.
