Biography

Hannes Marais was a strong tight-head prop who played 35 Tests over 11 years and captained South Africa 11 times. Born in Somerset East on 21 September 1941, he played on the flank at Stellenbosch before Danie Craven moved him to the front row. He played for Western Province, Eastern Province and North Eastern Cape.

He captained the 1971 team that went unbeaten through Australia, and led South Africa against the 1974 British Isles side and on the 1974 tour of France, where both Tests were won. He was also known for his interest in antiques and prehistoric artefacts, and later served as a national selector.
