Biography

Dougie Morkel was one of the outstanding forwards and goal-kickers of the early Springbok era. Born in Kimberley on 26 October 1885, he played for Transvaal and toured Britain and Ireland in both 1906–07 and 1912–13.

He played nine Tests between 1906 and 1913 and was never on a losing side. He captained South Africa twice, including the 14–10 win over the British Isles in 1910, when he also scored. In South Africa’s first Test against France in 1913 he scored two tries and a famous long-range penalty in a 38–5 win. He scored 38 Test points in all. He died on 20 February 1950.
