Biography

Butch James was a hard-tackling flyhalf who played 42 Tests between 2001 and 2011. Born in Johannesburg on 8 January 1979 and educated at Maritzburg College, he played for the Sharks, Bath and the Lions.

He kicked five penalties in his second Test, a 20–15 win over France in 2001. After a spell troubled by injuries and disciplinary issues, he returned to be the flyhalf in the 2007 World Cup-winning side, scoring a try in the quarter-final and playing in the final. He also played at the 2011 World Cup.
