Biography

Gary Teichmann was a quiet, hard-working eighthman who captained South Africa in 36 of his 42 Tests. Born in Gwelo, Rhodesia, on 9 January 1967 and educated at Hilton College, he played for Natal.

Under his captaincy the Springboks won 26 of 36 Tests, including a record-equalling 17 in a row in 1997–98 and the 1998 Tri Nations title. He was controversially left out of the 1999 World Cup squad. He was widely respected for his humility and courage.
