Biography

Francois Pienaar captained South Africa to the 1995 Rugby World Cup on home soil, one of the most famous moments in the country’s history. Born in Vereeniging on 2 January 1967, he played flank for Transvaal and was appointed captain on debut in 1993. He led the Springboks in all 29 of his Tests.

Under him South Africa won 15 Tests in a row in 1994–95. After the 15–12 win over New Zealand in the final, he received the trophy from President Nelson Mandela, who wore a Springbok jersey. He later played and coached at Saracens in England.
