Biography

Gawie Carelse was a big, relentless Eastern Province lock who played 14 Tests between 1964 and 1969. Born in Port Elizabeth on 21 July 1941, he made his debut in the 24–3 win over Wales in Durban and played six Tests against France. Frik du Preez called him a man of iron. He toured Ireland and Scotland in 1965 and Britain in 1969–70. He died on 3 August 2002.
