Biography

Jacky Morkel was a brilliant outside centre who played all five Tests on the 1912–13 Grand Slam tour and scored 16 points. Born in Somerset West on 13 November 1890, he played for Western Province.

He scored two tries against Ireland, one in the win over England at Twickenham, and a try and two conversions against France. During the First World War he served in German East Africa and died of dysentery on 15 May 1916, aged 25. He is buried in Dar es Salaam.
