Biography

Jan Stegmann was a long-striding, powerful wing who played all five Tests on the 1912–13 Grand Slam tour and won every one. Born in Bedford on 21 June 1887, he came to Stellenbosch as a forward, but Markötter moved him to the wing. He scored five Test tries, including three in the 38–0 win over Ireland.

He stayed in Britain after the tour, studied dentistry at Edinburgh University and ran for Scotland at athletics. He lived to 97 and died on 7 December 1984.
