Biography

Ian McCallum was a calm, sporting fullback and one of South Africa’s finest place-kickers. Born in Kitwe on 30 July 1944 and educated at Rondebosch, he played for Western Province and Natal and scored 62 points in 11 Tests.

His kicking was central to the 3–1 series win over the 1970 All Blacks: he scored in all four Tests, including 14 points in the 20–17 decider at Ellis Park. He then kicked well against France and on the unbeaten 1971 tour of Australia.
