Biography
Daan Retief started as a fast wing for Northern Transvaal before becoming a strong loose forward. Born in Lichtenburg on 28 June 1925, he played nine Tests between 1955 and 1956.
He scored a try in the 22–8 win over the British Isles in 1955, in both Tests against Australia in 1956, and in the 8–3 win over New Zealand in Wellington. He was known for his honesty: he once ruled himself out of a home Test because he felt he was not fully fit. He died on 22 September 2010.
