Biography
Jan Pickard started out as a fullback at Stellenbosch until Markötter turned him into a forward. Born in Piketberg on 25 December 1927 and educated at Paarl Gimnasium, he played for Western Province and won four caps between 1953 and 1958, against Australia, New Zealand and France. He toured in 1951–52 and 1956. He had an unusual habit of standing among the backs to make an extra man. He died on 30 May 1998.
