Biography

Basie Vivier captained South Africa in all five of his Tests, on the 1956 tour of Australia and New Zealand. Born in Pietersburg on 1 March 1927, he was a policeman who played fullback or flyhalf for the Orange Free State, and a reliable goal-kicker.

He toured Britain in 1951–52 without playing a Test. In 1956 he led South Africa to two wins over Australia and one over New Zealand, but the series in New Zealand was lost 3–1. He died on 18 October 2009.
