Biography

Danie Craven was one of the most important figures in the history of South African rugby. Born near Lindley on 11 October 1910, he became a Springbok before he had played provincial rugby, making his debut at scrumhalf against Wales in 1931, aged 21. He was famous for his long dive pass.

He won 16 caps, mostly at scrumhalf but also at flyhalf, centre and eighthman. He was part of the 1937 team that won in New Zealand and captained South Africa four times, including the 1938 series against the British Isles. He later became a coach, selector and, from 1956, president of the South African Rugby Board, leading the game for more than three decades. He died on 4 January 1993.
