Biography

Gerry Brand was one of the greatest fullbacks of his era and a prolific goal-kicker. Born in Cape Town on 8 October 1906, he played for Western Province and won 16 caps between 1928 and 1938, first on the wing and then at fullback.

He dropped a famous long goal in the 7–0 win over England at Twickenham in 1932, kicked steadily against the 1933 Wallabies, and was a key figure on the 1937 tour, when South Africa beat New Zealand in a series in New Zealand for the first time. His 55 Test points were a South African record at the time. He died on 4 February 1996.
