Biography

Phil Mostert was a versatile and durable forward who played 14 Tests over 11 years. Born in Krugersdorp on 30 October 1898 and educated at Hottentots-Holland and Paul Roos Gymnasium, he played for Western Province and could play prop, hooker or lock.

He made his debut in New Zealand in 1921, scored a try against the 1924 British Isles side and captained South Africa in all four Tests of the 1928 series against the All Blacks, which was shared 2–2. He finished on the 1931–32 tour that beat all four home nations. He was known for his sense of humour. He died on 3 October 1972.
