Biography
Mervyn Ellis was an all-round forward whom Markötter rated among the very best. He played six Tests between 1921 and 1924 and never lost one. Born in Kokstad on 16 October 1892 and educated at Rondebosch and Marist Brothers Linmeyer, he played for Transvaal. He made his debut in the 9–5 win over New Zealand at Eden Park in 1921 and played all four Tests against the 1924 British Isles side. He died on 24 March 1959.
