Biography
Paul Roos captained the 1906–07 touring team to Britain and Ireland, the side that first became known as the Springboks. Born in Rus-en-Vrede on 30 October 1880, he was a powerful forward for Stellenbosch and Western Province.
He made his debut in the 8–0 win over the British Isles in 1903. On tour he led South Africa to wins over Ireland and Wales and a draw with England, and his side lost just one Test. A teacher, he became rector of Stellenbosch Boys’ High, which was later renamed Paul Roos Gymnasium in his honour. He was known for his principles and sportsmanship, and later served in Parliament. He died on 22 September 1948.
