Biography

Japie Krige was Oubaas Markötter’s ideal of a centre, the man he called the prince of centres. Born in Klein Drakenstein on 5 July 1879 and educated at Paul Roos Gymnasium, he was quick, elusive and fierce in the tackle.

He played two Tests against the 1903 British Isles side and then starred on the 1906–07 tour of Britain and Ireland. He scored a try in the win over Ireland and played in the famous 11–0 defeat of Wales at Swansea. Off the field he was remembered as a modest, gentle man. He died on 14 January 1961.
