Biography

Charlie Jones was regarded in his time as one of the best fullbacks South Africa had produced: tall, strong, a fine tackler and a long kicker. Born in Kimberley on 24 March 1880 and educated at Kimberley Boys’ High, he played for Transvaal and captained the Wanderers club.

He played in the first two Tests against the 1903 British Isles side, a 10–10 draw in Johannesburg and a 0–0 draw in Kimberley. He was also one of the country’s fastest sprinters. He died on 6 March 1908, aged 27, after being struck by lightning.
