Biography
Frank Guthrie was one of the few men to play in both of South Africa’s first two Test series. Born in London on 3 November 1869 and educated at Diocesan College (Bishops), he became a composed, clever halfback for Western Province.
He played twice against the 1891 British Isles side, starting with the historic first Test in Port Elizabeth. Five years later, now with Eastern Province, he was recalled for the opening Test of the 1896 series, again at Crusaders (St George’s Park). He died on 19 June 1954, aged 84.
