Biography

Gerrie Sonnekus had one of the longest gaps between Tests in Springbok history. Born in Senekal on 1 February 1953, he was picked at scrumhalf at 21 for the third Test against the 1974 British Isles side, even though he was usually an eighthman. He returned to Test rugby ten years later as an eighthman against England in 1984, scoring a try in the 35–9 win at Ellis Park. He played for the Orange Free State.
