Biography

Alf Larard scored the try that brought South Africa its first Test win. In the fourth Test against the 1896 British Isles side at Newlands, his try, converted by Tommy Hepburn, settled a 5–0 victory.

Born in Kingston-upon-Hull, England, on 30 December 1870, he came to the Witwatersrand in the gold rush and played for the Diggers club, which dominated Transvaal rugby in the late 1890s. He played halfback in two Tests that year. He died on 15 August 1936.
