Biography
Harry Boyes was a pioneer of South African rugby both on and off the field. He was the first secretary of the South African Rugby Board when it was formed in 1889, and two years later he played on the right wing in the first two Tests against the 1891 British Isles tourists.
Born in Cape Town on 12 March 1868 and educated at Diocesan College (Bishops) and St Andrew’s in Grahamstown, he represented Griqualand West. He died after an accident at the Kimberley Exhibition on 26 October 1892, aged only 24, the first South African rugby international to die.
