Biography
Chubb Vigne was one of four men who played in all three Tests of 1891, South Africa’s first international series. In that era a side fielded only one centre, and Vigne filled the role each time against the touring British Isles team.
Born in Fort Beaufort on 24 December 1868 and educated at New College, he represented Transvaal. After his playing days he ran a furniture business in Kimberley, where he was remembered as a courteous and modest man who liked to call himself a mere ‘spare part’ in that pioneering team. He died on 9 April 1955.
