Biography
Fiks van der Merwe was one of the first heroes of Northern Transvaal rugby. He won his only cap on the flank in the 15–11 win over New Zealand at Newlands in 1949, the first Test after the Second World War. Born near Cradock on 2 January 1917, he became a policeman, served in the war and was captured in North Africa. He was famously fit and cheerful into old age, and died on 11 July 2005, aged 88.
