Biography

Ponie van der Westhuizen was a reliable, versatile back from Stellenbosch who played three Tests on the 1931–32 tour, against Ireland, England and Scotland, all of them won. Born in Darling on 4 November 1909 and educated at Swartland, he played on the wing and at centre for Western Province, and was known for safe hands and good kicking. His brother JC was vice-captain of that tour. He died on 5 March 1995.
