Biography

Theo Pienaar captained the first Springbok tour to Australia and New Zealand in 1921 but did not play in a Test, as injury kept him out and Boy Morkel led the side instead. Born in Barrydale on 23 November 1888, he trained as a teacher and captained Stellenbosch, Malmesbury and Western Province.

He played ten tour matches in 1921, later served as a national selector, and managed the 1931–32 team that beat all four home nations. He died on 14 November 1960.
