Biography

George Merry was a Scottish-born forward who played in South Africa’s first Test, against the British Isles in Port Elizabeth on 30 July 1891. Born in Govan on 3 March 1869, he settled in Natal and became one of the province’s leading early forwards, although he was playing for Eastern Province at the time of his Test.

Records from the period are thin, but his single appearance makes him one of the first men to represent South Africa. He died on 2 May 1917.
